Ask The Expert- Fixing a Curved, Bumpy Wall

Happy Friday All! First off, just want to mention that I’m guest posting over at Designstiles, sharing my imaginary South American Dream House. Come over and vacation with me!

Today is our first segment of Ask the Expert and reader "K" provided us with an interesting one:

The Question- "I have two entry closets in my foyer. I love that they are rounded but not the fact that they are covered in a pointy (painfully sharp)stucco-like coating. My husband has tried to sand a small patch to see if we could remove the coating and paint over it. The results were not pretty. SO...is there some type of paneling (I love raised wainscoting) that can be EASILY (we are not pros) molded to the curve of the wall? What other options/ suggestions does the expert have? Some have suggested just ripping down the closets and rebuilding them. Again, we are not pros, so I can't imagine recreating the existing curve would be something we could do."

The Data:

Andrew's Answer- "Curved raised panel wainscot is lovely! It is also not an easy project for most carpenters. I would leave that project to the pros. How about spackling over the rough surface with a vinyl spackling compound. Follow the manufacturers recommendations for preparation and application. Once it dries, sand it smooth, prime and paint. Good luck."

Nothing like a man to keep it short and sweet, right?

Four Textiles (and a Horse)

Just wanted to share a few textiles that have caught my eye recently...

The first one is for Erin, because I know she is contemplating Thibaut's Cheetah and I just love the look of it installed. Do it, girl!

This colorful scenery, Colombier Cream by Clarence House, just makes me really happy. Would love to see it as a headboard in a kids room.

Another Clarence House fabric (forget the name, sorry!) This blue botanical has been stuck in my head. Love the scale and the different varieties going on.

An antique suzani I'm hoping to use in a client's family room. It's super old and super pretty. I can't even imagine the time that goes into embroidering these pieces.

And then the horse- I shared this on instagram earlier this month, but thought I'd sneak the peek on the blog as well. This is a vignette in a dining room I designed last year. The horse figurine is vintage, the console is white lacquer, and the x-benches are done up in yellow chinoiserie silk. I love the combo!

RIP- My discontinued favorites

I have a few favorites in my arsenal- gorgeous patterned fabrics, quirky lighting perfection, inexpensive furniture finds- and recently I've been dismayed to find quite a few of them have been discontinued. Since they will never live on to be featured in any of my future projects, I thought I would pay tribute to them here. Shame on you manufacturers, for pulling the plug on such gems. Tear.

Schumacher- Pearl River in Document colorwave.

I had big plans to turn this dynamic fabric into an oversized ottoman in my clients family room. It was to be the centerpiece of the room with various accent pieces done in colors pulled from the fabric. Then the day I go to order the yardage BAM no longer available.

I admit to being greatly inspired by one of my all time favorite family rooms- Julie Bowen's- designed by her sister, Molly Luetkemeyer. Now it's never gonna happen. Bummer. (No worries, we found a gorgeous replacement.)

Jamie Drake- Flowering Lotus Pendant

This would have been perfect over the table in the same family room mentioned above. Brass, organic and one of a kind, I love it both in groupings and on its own. Sorry Charlie, no longer available.

Sara Gilbane paired three pendants over a dining table as seen in TradHome. It also adds the perfect eclectic punch hung over a bed in a nursery by Finnian Moon.

Schumacher- Samarkand Ikat in Document

Another Schumacher favorite I've been dying to use forever. Once I discovered Pearl River was a gonner I considered this stunner for the big ottoman. Alas, they pulled the plug on this colorwave as well. Why, Lawd, why? I just love the combination of magenta, orange and purple and how it comes together in this delightful tribal pattern.

While I'll never get to use it, I did enjoy seeing it used for pillows and chairs on a project by Spruce Interior Design.

Cindy Crawford for JC Penney- Trellis foot stool

OH JC Penney!!! Why in the world did you stop making my favorite little stool ever? This guy was under $100 a ridiculously customizable. Wishing I would have hoarded like 27 on them so I could use them on future projects. At least I have my own.

My stools with their second makeover are seen on the left. Meredith Heron used them on a project as well. I love how different each set can look with just a bit of spray paint and fabric.

So there you have it. Some of my loves taken from me far too soon. Luckily for me there's lots of good stuff out there, so I'm bound to find some new favorites. Still- if anyone out there has any of these products- hit me up! I have no problem hoarding a good thing.

Project Girly-Glam Week 2

Monday, you come so soon! If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook you might know that I'm just returning from a wonderful long weekend in Charleston. I ate, I shopped, I conquered... all while suffering from a pretty nasty cold. Luckily while I was off on a little playtime, the guys were working hard on Project Girly-Glam and MrBoy bathrooms. So without further ado, here's a little recap of week 2 of construction.

The first couple of days in this week aren't very exciting in the visual department. Plumbers install the shower drain, walls are firred out to make sure everything is plumb and even, floor joists are sistered to strengthen the structural integrity (often times we pull up the floors to discover rotten joists!) GirlyGlam had a little situation where the last contractors cut away the joists to make room for the plumbing. For the record, that is a NO-NO and we have since added in additional support.

Day 3 the plywood floor goes down and suddenly it’s so much easier to walk in the rooms. (No joke I was balancing on the joists on day two in 4" wedges and trying to look all smooth, but it was hard.) I should note that before the plywood goes down, we have to get all of our inspections (electrical, plumbing, construction.) Later in the day it's insulation and fireblocking.

TIP: We recommend a generous bead of construction adhesive and screw shank nails to make sure the floor is really solid and not squeaky!

I caught a funny (to me) moment where they were testing out the tub in Girly Glam and it didn't quite fit before they cut away one extra piece of trim. It can be tough working in a tight space! The tub has to fit just right. So here's video number 2.

No worries, problem was solved and within in minutes, Dad was checking to make sure we were level.

The room continues to take shape on Day 4 and 5. Wonderboard is installed in the shower/tub areas and moisture and mold resistant drywall is installed elsewhere. As an extra waterproofing measure we install a black plastic moisture membrane behind the wonderboard. If there were ever a pinhole leak in the grout, this would prevent lots of damage. It's a small step, but definitely worth doing!

Today we are picking up the tile and then the fun really begins. I'll be back next Monday with another update. (And better pictures, I promise. Now that we are done the mess, it will be easier to photograph.)

I'm too chicken-shit to go for crazy pattern on the walls, but I sure do like to peek at homes that really go for it. When your walls are so bold, you really have to edit pieces wisely, so I also like investigating the bits and accents.

Mismatched

We have been doing a lot of bathrooms lately! If I had to analyze the economy based on my small microcosm, I would conclude that many people aren't quite ready to tackle big projects like kitchens and additions, but are itching to make smaller improvements. The next best thing is the bath!

In preparation for design and construction I have been digging up lots of inspiration and will be sure to share some in upcoming weeks. One of my favorite ways to add a little flavor to the bath is with mismatched mirrors. Who says two sinks need identical mirrors? I like the idea of each partner choosing a mirror that best suits their own style. Good design = thinking outside the ~~box~~ plain medicine cabinet.

Project Girly Glam Bathroom Begins!

Last week we started a new construction project: two tween bathrooms. The girl bathroom I have dubbed project girly-glam (I shared the mood board here) and the boy bathroom I'm just calling boy bathroom for now. Am I a terrible sexist? I may need to come up with a new moniker.

I thought it might be interesting to share the (quasi) real-time stages of a bathroom construction project. Typically a full bath remodel is a 4 week project. Today I'll share a little peek of what happens in the first week.

First let's start with the original baths. Here's Girly-Glam in her original state...

And Mr Boy Bath, Before...

The first few days of the job are the messiest. Cabinetry, fixtures and tile are broken down and carried out. By the time we are done, the spaces look like shells. It gets pretty ugly before it gets pretty!

Since its such a small space and hard to capture on camera, I thought I might try something new and show you guys a little video mid-demolition. I apologize in advance if I sound like a pre-pubescent boy who talks too fast and can't handle a camera properly.

The next day I came back to find Girly-Glam looking like this. Check out all the crap the last contractor left in the floor! Don’t worry, we will clean it up and do it right.

Not to leave out MrBoy, here is his bathroom after the first week of demo.

Other happenings in week one: Plumbers lay their pipes and prepare for new fixture locations. Electricians run their wires. I frantically check on status of tile deliveries.

Hopefully I’ll do a good job of documenting the progress and be back next Monday with a recap or week 2.

Fabric pairings for a master bedroom project

Since there have been a bunch of requests for me to show more fabric pairings, I thought it would be fun to show a peek of a master bedroom I’ve been working on that is almost finished. This room is traditional, neutral, subtly-beachy with just the perfect amount of color and pattern. The walls are a blue-green grasscloth and the fabrics pick up that tone and also mix in taupey mushroom and coral.

Here is the combination we used. We mixed in two Schumacher’s ikat/tribal prints and balanced them out with some geometrics, solids and a wee bit of zebra.

The window bench has most of the fun fabrics, but we also repeat them for bed pillows, a bench and chair pillow as well.

Can’t wait to finish so I can show you the whole space! We’re just a little stuck on bedding. We can’t seem to find the perfect neutral duvet. We are thinking either textured or just creamy with hotel piping. Do you guys have any favorites? I’d much prefer a blanket to a duvet, but you have to pick and choose your battles ;)

Heyoo, so some exciting news around these parts was that last week I was featured in a 6 page spread in the Israeli magazine, Go Style! I'd like to give a huge thank you and shout out to my blog buddy, Chedva, of Rooms and Words, who sought me out and wrote the lovely article. Truthfully, I have no idea if the article is lovely, as I can't read Hebrew, but I have no doubt she did a great job. (And I'm working on getting it translated... well not really, but I plan to.)

Internet press is all fun and good, but the fact that this is a real-life glossy really tickles my fancy. I'm counting down the days until it arrives in the mail. I can't wait to touch it and smell it and skip around my office with the article in my hands. I wonder if I can get a second copy so that I can sleep next to it at night and cuddle up to it.

Kiddding.

Before and After- Ottoman Makeover for Mom

As I mentioned earlier in the week, I made my mother an ottoman for Christmas. I took an original low coffee table, added a shelf and upholstered the top. (Details broken down below!) This was my first time attempting anything like this, and while it’s definitely not perfect, I’m pleased with the result. My mom is thrilled, so that is what’s most important.

The story of this ottoman began almost a year ago when I was shopping for a coffee table for my own apartment. I walked into Phantastic Phinds (a consignment shop in the Philadelphia area) and knew right away that this little table had potential.

(I forgot to take a before photo, but managed to find the picture above here!)

It was much too low though- only about 11” high- so I had my trusted carpenter, Angelo, build me an extension. He created a piece with arched openings on each side so that I could access a shelf below the table top. I thought it had great potential, but ended up falling in love with a different coffee table for my space. For about 9 months, it sat in this state...

And then I took a good look at my parents’ living room and realized their current ottoman set-up was totally non-functional. It was too long, too narrow, and junk always piled up on top of it, not leaving much room for drinks or feet. That’s when the light went off that my little thrift store find would be the perfect gift for my momma.

Since we weren’t changing out the dark sofa or dark rug, I knew I needed to add a little happy color with the ottoman. So I went to task priming…

And then painting the base and lower shelf…

I chose Sherwin Williams Naval Blue. I felt it was a nice compliment to the rug- dark while still feeling a little bold and lively. You can see in the shot above I put the shelf in place.

I had my dad cut me a piece of plywood for the top. I then layered on 2" foam and batting and stapled away.

The next step was sewing the cording and then stapling on the fabric and cording. I've never done cording and the stitching was terribly crooked. Oh well, hidden from view! (Hehe, sorry, Mom.)

Dad helped me screw in the top and it was all done!

Now the clutter is hidden on the lower shelf, the tray actually fits the ottoman and the room is colorful and happy. That's my kind of makeover.

pattern play time

My "sister" Deb gifted me this scarf for Christmas and I am absolutely in love with the colors and patterns. The birds go in all directions and the colors (green, orange, yellow pink) are the softest neon tone. I'm not really going to use it as a curtain, but it sure is fun to see it against Kelly Wearstler's Gordian Weave Pillows. (Soon to be delivered to my client's home.) I'm All about this unexpected pattern pairing today- neon + whimsy + elegant = faboo.

Happy New Years Eve plus Windsor Smith

While the world is busy preparing for festivities tonight, I find my heart a flutter staring at this gorgeous room by Windsor Smith. In a perfect world, this would be the spot I’d gather with an intimate group of besties to ring in the new year. I can’t get enough her style: sophisticated, eclectic and warm … exactly what I strive to Be and Design. Favorite details? The patterned sofa covered in an antique textile, the ornate white octagonal coffee table, the smattering of blue and white pottery, the silver.

Sorry I was MIA all this week. I rather enjoyed a blogcation and now I feel refreshed to kick off 2012 in high style. Next week I’m sharing my Christmas-creations, I promise.

Jingle Hell

Friends, it’s about that time of the year when I reach the brink of emotional collapse. I wish I was one of those holly-jolly holiday types, but really I’m more stressed, exhausted and prone to hitting the wine at noon-oclock. In a classic case of overachieving and under-preparing I decided to MAKE a lot of my gifts this year at the last minute. Well, it’s not going so well and I am feeling like a failure and a bad gift giver.

I’m going to close up shop around these parts to try to fix my monster creations and maybe even wrap up a few designs for clients (ho ho ho.) Triple crossing my fingers that I’m happy with the results and can share next week. And if they totally suck, I’m hoping my loved ones understand that it’s the thought and effort that counts.

DIY nailhead mirror

When it comes to Do-It-Yourself projects, I have no problem attempting a hack or two in my own home, but for clients, my policy is to leave the craftsmanship to professionals. But when working on a powder room recently, my client and I were totally stumped to find a mirror to fit between two tight sconces. My solution? Craft our own mirror. I found an white picture frame that was just the right size, had my Dad apply upholstery nails, got a piece of plate mirror cut.... and tada!... custom nailhead mirror.

Sorry for the totally crappy photos- iPhone plus dark day made it hard to capture it's true beauty. Same goes with my reflection, wink wink.

The hardest part was the even placement of the nailheads. I'm anal and worked it all out in my CAD system. If you aren't quite as technical, you could probably eyeball it, but it's not a bad idea to trace the frame and lay it out first. I had my father pre-drill the holes in our shop to be most precise, but the upholstery nails could also be hammered in. Just be careful with the delicate frame.

PS- the gray grasscloth we put into the powder room is divine!

I was going to name this post "Purples that don't make me want to Vom," but that middle room doesn't have much purple does it? Irregardless, I’m really feeling the jewel tones today. We woke up to frost here in Philadelphia and I’m craving the warmth these spaces exude. The modern, bohemian, rustic touches don’t hurt either. Happy Monday!

My Bookshelves and Entry Area

Eff I still feel like hell in a handbasket. Perusing the internet for new and mindblowing spaces hasn't exactly been on the top of the to-do list, so today I'm taking the easy way out and finishing up my own house tour. I've shown you the living area, the office nook, the dining area and the bar cart, so all that's left is the entry.

This is my drop zone, just to the left of the entrance. Essentials for a drop zone: mirror, place for keys and a few pretties. I gave the 411 on an easy way to trace the mirror frame here. The little table was scooped up at the Germantown Estate Warehouse. I love the little scalloped arches... it kinda feels a little Moroccan, right?

I used to have the Eames chair in the living room, but it was always so hard to work around it- both size-wise and design-wise. It's much better off making its own statement over here and it's a nice spot to read. No one puts Baby in the corner, but I put Eames in the corner and gosh darn it, I like it. Also love how the cowhide loosely defines this area. A rectangular rug would have been all wrong here, but this organic carmely goodness just makes me happy.

So unless you've been living under a rock, you know that I put two plate mirrors behind the bookcase to give it a reflective-glam twist. You can see the first iteration of the bookshelf here and learn more about the art there. And no, I did not glue the mirrors to the wall or the shelf, they are just chillin back there. (I get asked that all the time.)

A widdle-bit closer. I just love how you can see my wallpaper reflected from across the room next to the horse's butt.

My birdcage makeover ended up getting edited out of my clients bookshelves, so I plopped it in mine and stuck an airplant inside

This outtake cracks me up because of the two "errors"- you can see Courtney in the mirror (this shelf was hard to shoot!) and you can also tell that the mirror stops before the end of the bookcase. Oh well, it's not perfect and that's fine with me. I still love my horsey.

To the right of the door is my entry bench. It's the spot where I pull on my boots, drop my purse and store Bailey's toys and coats. It's handy having the bench so close to the living area because it acts as bonus seating on the fly.

I love the art. It's moved all over the apartment and looks great with everything. You can see two other vignettes with it here.

Just had to get a little closer because I so love my La Fiorentina bench and ikat fabrics. These pillows were the very last thing I sewed to finish up the place.

And let me just finish up with the whole entry area, as seen from the living room. Did you notice I don't have any coat hooks? Coat hooks just didn't fit my style. Truthfully, most people drop their coats on the bench, or I hang them up in my closet.

Thanks for hanging out with me, but I have to hit the fabric store now, so it's time to kick you out.

coffee table styling

I seriously never tire of gazing at images of perfectly styled coffee tables. There are just so many ways to achieve a pleasing visual balance of books, pretties, trays and table space. There is less is more, and more is more, and more times fresh foliage divided by choice animal figurine more.

I've found styling a coffee table for someone else to be one of the trickier styling challenges. A coffee table gets used a heck of a lot more than your typical vignette like a bookshelf or a console table. If you go all out and don't leave space for feet or the occasional plate, then you may be pretty but you're not that practical. And that's just not good style is it?

I suppose the key to lived-in-beauty is all about balance, balance, balance! My dad (and business partner) loves to say that form follows function. But I wonder... can't they walk together in harmony?

Moroccan Curves in the bathroom

One of my favorite elements in the bathroom design I featured last week is the curvy shower valance we plan to hang over the tub. The curves remind me of a Moroccan archway and they feel like the perfect eclectic surprise in an otherwise classic room. With all of the tile and hard fixtures, bathrooms are just begging for a little warmth and softness. Whether it's a fabric valance, a built-in or even a mirror, these curves are my new favorite accessory for the bath.

A bathroom design sneak peek

I thought I’d show you a sneak peek of a bathroom design I am working on. The phrase “girly glam” makes me wince a bit, but it just seems so fitting for the space. While the permanent fixtures are more neutral (and thus timeless) we were able to have a lot of fun with the accessories. I'm working with some clients to re-do their family room and in the process they are letting go of a beautiful mahogany stained entertainment center. It is still available from Pottery Barn for $2,249, but you can snag this one for less than half that at $995.

Turning an Awkward Spot into a Focal Point

There’s this weird spot along the brick wall in between my office nook and my kitchen. It looks like it used to be a doorway, but has since been drywalled over and it has two frames inside of it. I’ve always thought of it as an eyesore amongst my beautiful white brick.

I think the frames confused me. Should I hang pictures in there? Should I wallpaper them? For months that spot sat empty.

I’m lying...

For months that spot collected crap. It was that awkward spot where I plopped a too-large buffet and dumped all my extra shit on top of it.

And then one day I won my little bar cart at an auction. I placed the cart in front of the faux-door and started brainstorming. The light bulb went off when I realized I didn’t need to work around the frames; I could decorate right over them. So I painted the whole area black to set it apart from the brick and help the frames disappear. I hung my art right over the top frame and styled up my bar cart to obscure the bottom frame.

And that, my friends, is how my bar cart vignette was born.

Funny how something that stumped me for so long could turn into one of my favorite focal points.

An Orangerie-inspired Living Room Design

Last week on her blog, Roxy showed us her Duchess chairs upholstered in the beautiful Orangerie fabric by Designers Guild. I adore this fabric- the scale and colorwave are perfect- and it looks oh so cute on her gold framed chair. I just had to put together a little living room inspired by the chairs.

I envision this is a small apartment of a city gal who loves traditional-with-a-twist and certainly isn’t afraid of color. I could see myself wanting to cozy up in this happy spot with a cup of English Breakfast tea and a few biscuits. (Or if it's after 5pm let's roll out the bar cart and have a cocktail!)

I’m just loving lavender, orange and cobalt mixed with Orangerie. Hmm touches of Chinoiserie and Hollywood Regency, color and pattern abound... am I becoming predictable? I promise you I have more tricks up my sleeve ;)

Wow, what a week!! I have just been completely blown away by the response to my home. I like to joke that I'm going viral, even though that sounds icky. I mean, I'm not exactly "David After the Dentist," but it's exciting to know so many people enjoy my design and have been sharing it with others. I'd like to thank everyone who has reposted my work, including some of my favorite bloggers, Caitlin, Amber and Nicole. It even went up on West Elm's blog. I'm surprised, honored and so grateful. There have been many dorky happy dance moments.

As of this posting, my Design Sponge Sneak Peek has 98 comments.

Whaaaa? So excited. Though... would I be totally cray-cray if I admitted I'd really like 100? I mean who doesn't want that kinda milestone? So yea, I don't ask of much of you guys, but if you DO absolutely love the space and haven't commented yet, please do. (It's so easy.) It would be really meaningful to me if a long time reader, first time commenter was my number 100.

Do you think I'm totally ridiculous? Whatever, its my house party and I can be a lil ridiculous if I want to. Tell me your thoughts, here.

Completing this project felt so amazing and now I'm really looking forward to designing new spaces. I have a few design slots open for next year, so if you live in the Philadelphia area and want help creating a finished, beautiful home, please contact me! You don't need to be as crazy about color or pattern as me. I work with all kinds of spaces and all kinds of budgets. I like modern, I like traditional (with a twist,) I like to create spaces that reflect their owners and feel warm, layered and perfectly eclectic. My Living Room Tour

Who's totally sick of my apartment by now? The good news is I'm showing you new stuff. All the views and angles that maybe didn't make the DesignSponge cut, but reflect the whole space. Gotta keep it real after all. So come on in, let's hang out in my living room. (And by "room", I mean area. It is an open loft, after all.)

WARNING- THIS POST IS LONGISH. YOU MAY WANT TO GRAB THAT CUP OF COFFEE NOW.

My living area is a little weird in that there are only two walls and it doesn't have any art. That left a void for me to fill with a pop of wallpaper and plenty of patterns.

My sofa sets the tone for the space. I had very specific wants for mine: natural linen, skirted, tailored with a bohemian feel. I went over specific details of the look here. I'm currently in love with the pillows I have. I prefer my pillows to coordinate but not be symmetrical. Black is the recurring theme in the space. Not in-your-face-black, but chic-and-eclectic black.

Can we talk about my favorite pillow? It’s the goddesses. Jim Thompson, I love you for creating this fabric. You’ll see more of this in an awesome living room I designed soon! (I totes used the scraps to make myself that lumbar pillow.)

The big empty frame was an idea I stole from my sister Meg. I’m SO not a words on wall girl, but on a whim I hung that LOVE sign in the middle. It works for me plus it is an iconic Philadelphia symbol. Have I mentioned how much I like my vintage elephant? Also a gift from my sister.

Continuing counter clockwise (who goes counter clockwise?) is my wallpaper nook. I CANNOT tell you how hard it was to keep this wall to myself. I adore this paper. The chairs were an amazing auction score. I was terrified for months to make a hole in that paper, but Erin finally convinced me to spray my woody mirror teal and hang it on the wall.

Blue mirror, meet Blue wall. Totally different blues and I love both of them equally. Oh and the paper is Paradiso by Nina Campbell. It's brilliant in every colorwave.

The corner view. I like how my bench is sort of part of the living room, but doing entrance-way duties as well. In an open space, it's even more important for all areas to coordinate. I challenged myself by throwing in lots of different patterns and styles because matching just isn't my thing.

I need to zoom in to show you my coffee table. The glass is so chunky! Another $30 auction win. Yep, I'm an auction junky. I like how the glass table brings in a Hollywood Regency vibe (meets bohemian, meets Asian.)

Santa, can I pretty please have a real Beni Ouarain rug? Sigh.

My TV is in a great spot because it’s ideal viewing from the sofa but not visible when you walk in the door. I would have preferred to have the television on a nice long credenza, but alas, space didn’t allow for that. So I took my two Ikea Rast’s and had my carpenter, Angelo, build a component holder to match.

See how I gave it the same brass corner brackets? That’s what I call a custom mini TV credenza for around $150. Oh and I sprayed the toe kick gold. What do you guys think about that? Can’t decide if I like it better gold or black.

Zee detail of my shelf. My famous pagoda, art by Leigh Viner, Lame' Porcelain Organic Vases by Arteriors Home, Ballard Designs Mirror, and twigs from Mother Earth. The shelf and brackets are Ikea. Brackets used to be chrome but I sprayed them gold because I have an addiction.

And then there’s my craigslisted bergere chairs. I tried to gold leaf them but hours and hours and hours of work led them to look like a gold tinfoil craft project disaster. So I stripped and spray painted. My parents think I have a “problem” with spray paint. I admit to nearly taking it too far, but I did try to balance out the bling with wood elements and vintage pieces. Spray paint is budget friendly but can lead to you looking cheap. I will ideally upgrade these chairs at some point to something antique, but they work for now.

Ahh my clerestory windows in their full glory. My apartment is so light and open. It’s hard to not walk into it and be happy.

And that, my friends is the full living room! Thanks for touring with me. I hope it didn't disappoint from the trailers. I said the theme was black in the beginning of the post, but after reviewing this I'm thinking it's gold too. Let's just go with eclectic.

a few thoughts on bold blue walls

HAH! I was supposed to take the day off the blog but I just had to share my thoughts on bold wall colors. I’ve read a lot of comments (a CRAZY LOT- thank you!) about how I’m so brave with color, or how people wish they could be so bold etc…

First and foremost, I am a white wall girl. I think I have something like 15 wall sections in the main living area and only one of them is painted. (See floor plan here.) I also am not usually a fan of the “accent wall.” Hearing that phrase kinda makes me cringe. So how did I end up with one in my loft?

Well the office nook is a dark corner of the loft. It has no natural light, no architectural intrigue… just not a lot going for it. When it was white it seemed depressing, awkward and empty. I NEEDED color there to set it apart and make it its own area. A soothing, safe color would have done nothing for the space. Going bold was the only way to go. Now, the nook is vibrant, happy and purposeful. It helps make a room out of an ambiguous alcove.

I don’t know if I could handle the bright blue in a 4-walled room. That would overwhelm me or I might tire of it quicker. But in an open space it just glows without taking over. I think the accent wall works here because while it’s a statement maker, it’s not the only statement in the space. You don’t walk in the door and see it right away. Also, it doesn’t “match” any other element in the apartment. It stands on its own, while still coordinating.

Here are a few loose tips I have for people who want bold color on their walls. Don’t repeat the wall color again in the room- let that blue (or green, or pink etc) be the special moment for that hue. Don’t be afraid to incorporate other colors into the room. Additional colors add depth and layer and can balance out the intensity of the wall choice. Mix in a good dose of white to contrast. Don’t forget to mix textures! If your wall is glossy, add in something rustic, or furry, or textural, or mirrored. (Both my shelf and the fretwork on my cabinets served that purpose for me.) Edit, edit, edit. Add items in and take items away- a good room should feel perfectly balanced. Note that I don’t mean symmetrical or matching.

Damn, this post turned long again! Obviously there are great designers out there who have broken all of the rules that I just listed and created stunning spaces. This is what works for me, but ultimately you have to create your own design rules.

My Office Nook

Minimalists, avert your eyes! Today I'm talking about my office nook. It's sort of the colorful thesis statement to my boldly embellished-but-edited design essay. But before we dive right in, let me rewind to yesterday. Hot diggity dog! I'm blown away by the positive response to my home. There were literally times last night when I had to get up out of my chair and do a little jig over a particularly kind comment. It been such a high and I just wanted to say THANK YOU to those who are leaving nice notes, spreading the word, re-posting, tweeting, facebooking, or just quietly checking me out on your own. As I've been known to say, you rock like Keds and tube socks.

Ok now that we are done making out, let's talk about this desk area. So the obvious stuff- the wall is blue (Olympic Brilliant Blue) and the desk is hot pink (Glidden Very Bery.) I knew my white and wood Rasts would be the perfect foil to all that color, but the original version were feeling a little flat to me. Danika came to the rescue, providing me with her Harper O'verlays. (Custom-sized to fit the Rast.) Easy peasy: spray glue, spray paint, instant oomph for my drawer fronts. I heart them.

The foo dog lamps are from Barbara Cosgrove. I just seem to need a little bit of Asian in each of my areas. You can quote me on that.

I gave my JC Penney stools a fancy new upholstery job using the Basset McNab floral I showed back here. (Notice the chevron from my dining chairs is in that post too? I totally was giving you guys hints. Sike, I actually had no clue what I was doing with it back then.)

Mixing red bamboo stools with a pink and blue wall... am I crazy? What can I say, I love a good clash.

Onto the ahhhrt. The centerpiece is a vintage Indian poster that's 3D- made with real fabric and beads. Me Likey. I bought it from the Loaded Trunk and you can see a better pic of it here. Flanking in on the left side we have the ostriches by John Murphy and naked butt guy, picked up a thrift store. Rounding out the right side is what I presume to be a Picasso print, also a thrift store purchase, and my astrological bulls, snagged on 20x200.

The shelf is woody and rustic. I got the idea from Nelya and actually bought it on Ebay!. The print on the shelf is by Joan Miro and was picked up at an awesome mid-century warehouse in Fishtown.

And that about sums up my office nook. I don’t really use it as an office as evidenced by the fact that I don’t have a proper desk chair. It’s where I store my record player, tools & supplies and laptop when it’s charging.

I recognize there is a WHOLE LOT going on here. Believe it or not, I actually took a few items away during the design process (thanks, Coco Chanel) and I'm still mad I didn't style the desk for the shoot. I love that its super saturated but isn't just about the color. Layered eclectic beauty. Or at least that's what I'm telling myself.

Goodness that was long! Hope that wasn’t totally boring and you enjoyed the details and sources. I have a crazy day today and tomorrow, so I’m gonna play hooky until Thursday. Tune in next time- I'll be diving into the living room. SO many bonus shots there!

Me, My Wallpaper and Design Sponge!

THE DAY IS FINALLY HERE!!!

After months of teasing y'all with snippets of my apartment, today you're getting a full house tour. I'm honored that my home has been selected as one of Design Sponge's "Sneak Peeks." Please go check out the tour and then come back and tell me what you think!

I'm for sure guilty of being incredibly hard on myself. In my head, the space could be more perfect, the styling of the shoot could be improved, the press could be more prestigious (no dis on Design Sponge intended! I'm just a perfectionist) and I could be less awkward in the above photo. But today I am trying to quiet all those voices and just be proud of the accomplishment. I finished the space and I really like it. I hope others like it too, but at the end of the day, I can't rely on other people's opinions to make me happy. I'm going to try to remember that when I check D*S for comments about 147 times today.

Design Sponge picked a dozen beautiful shots for the tour, but there are many more and I'll be sharing them here on the blog. I'll go over each area in more detail, starting tomorrow with the Office nook. Trust, by the time I'm done, you guys will be so sick of the place you'll be ready for me to move out and start all over again.

Admittedly, I'm quasi-hyperventilating as I prepare to post this. I poured SO much of myself into creating this space and it's tough knowing lots of strangers will judge it. But many of you have been so supportive and that makes me confident to put more of my work out there. Yippee! (And thankfully it's not Apartment Therapy. Those readers are MEAN.)

Oh and Philadelphia peeps I'm for hire. K, thanks. Off to distract myself from the computer...

Happy Monday Mornin. The purpose of this post is to tell you that you need to come back my way in a couple of hours. I have something funner than fun planned for you.

In the meanwhile, here is our Thanksgiving table I threw together on the fly. Never much the planner, I forgot to pick up flowers and other type decorations before the holiday. So this was my “work-with-what-you-got” table. I also successfully prepared two delicious sides- Victoria’s baked ratatouille, and Julie’s Roast butternut squash and kale salad. Thanks for inspiring, ladies!

As I take a deep breath before I dash out the door to battle the crowds at the grocery store, I want to take this moment to be thankful. This year has been busy as ever- full of excitement, growth, struggle, disappointment and triumph. I'm just so grateful for all the love and support in my life. I'm looking forward to these last weeks of 2011 to slow down, enjoy la dolce vita and give back to others.

I've have great opportunities and design project this year and I'm really excited about where my career is headed. I feel so frickin lucky that I get to be creative and design beautiful homes and work with amazing clients. Next year is going to be a good one as I will finally get to show two big projects that I am SO proud of!

Having a blog has been both rewarding and extremely challenging. I struggle with the daily discipline and the fear of putting myself, my work and my ideas out there. I can't tell you how wonderful it is to be able to have a voice and an outlet. I just want to thank each and everyone of you for showing up, tuning in and supporting me along the way. Whether its loud & proud or the quiet lurkers. You are all good in my book.

A Thanksgiving Day table- Naomi Style

Thanksgiving is upon us, friends! I happen to love the holiday, mainly because it involves a lot of food and not a lot of work on my end. Someday I want to host myself, but until then I'll continue to crash my parents' house and attempt to set a fierce table.

When Meg from Philadelphia citypaper asked me to design an attention-getting Thanksgiving table, I was all too eager to show how to do Turkey Day hip and eclectic. Who's checked out new the House Beautiful? The December/January issue had so many hits for me. I've looked through it once, but will definitely need to pour over it in more detail tonight. Here are are just a few of the rooms that stood out to me...

The home of Mark D Sikes and Michael Griffin is absolutely stunning. It’s really the perfect mixture of traditional and eclectic. I love how its very neutral yet layered and sprinkled with the perfect proportion of Chinoiserie accents. Honestly I could move right in.

I love it all the subtleties, like the chunky natural rug and the simple white curtains with iron hardware. Remember my essentials for a boho glam pad? This space has it all for me without really screaming Boho or Glam.

Fireplace and coffee table styling are so perfect- edited maximalist at its best! The coffee table top is a potential DIY project. Did you catch Jenny's tutorial?

The entry was equally stunning with its high gloss black door and whitewashed floors. Those columns on the right are amazing. Would love to see another shot of them.

The issue also includes another gorgeous bohemian chic pad by Commune Design. I love their work. The whole spread is well done, but I especially like the dining room below.

And how about this bedroom by Maine Design? A silver four poster bed mixed with bohemian fabrics could be coo coo for cocoa puffs, but somehow this room manages to be restrained and lovely.

House Beautiful and Veranda have been my favorite magazines lately. Which mags do it for you? This one is definitely worth a pick up. I'm off to pour over the details some more. So much good styling to study.

Today the gold is a very special gold because it’s a piece of my own. What you are seeing here is a tight shot of a shelf of mine featuring a vintage pagoda, a little mirror, a three gold lame' vases from Arteriors Home. This vignette makes me quite happy – it’s something about the mix of shapes and sheens and textures. I hope you enjoy it too.

And I have just one more sneak peek of gold from my home (ok, technically it's brass.) You’ll have to go over to MeetMe in Philadelphia, where I am sharing one of my favorite things. Ashley has been revealing her favorite things all week and it has been really fun to read.

Now guys, I want to acknowledge that I have been a big, huge, ridiculous tease when it comes to showing full pictures of my place. The truth of the matter is that I’ve been going for the gold myself. I am SO proud of my apartment (and that’s hard for me to say!) that I really want to share it with a broader audience. I’ve been putting myself out there and reaching out to a few bigger sites even though I’m terrified of being rejected. All week I’ve been like that lame girl who sits by the phone waiting for the guy to call and tell her she’s pretty enough.

Hold onto your hats, folks! I'm going for the gold all week long. Today, it's gold in the bathroom. I just love this image. Not because I have fantasies of frolicking about my home in a tutu and heels, but because the gold is done just right in this space. This is how you do properly do gold in a bathroom- graceful mirror, faucets & corresponding components, and decorative hardware. Ornate, but not over the top. (Essential for gold- if it's over the top that's when things turn ugly.)

I think I'll avoid the gold shower (tehe,) but I'd gladly powder my nose in any of these spaces. Is it too much for you? For me, just the smallest dose of gold in the bathroom is the best.

I'm absolutely smitten with this little pug statue in Lauren Santo Domingo's home. I love the grouping of tables and Mr Pug fits nicely into the mix. Reminds me a little of the table I posted way back here. These pics come from a Coveteur spread on her home. Have you seen it? It's gooood.

the elusive black and gold commode

I'm on the hunt for the perfect vintage black chest for one of my clients. It needs to have just the right amount of gold detailing and preferably some sexy little legs. I love these striking pieces- alone they are pretty fabulous, but styled up they are straight up vignette ecstasy. Really, what doesn't look good with black and gold? I'm thinking lamp, figurine, bowl and books mixed in colorful, metallic and aged... not quite sure of the order though. First step, I must find that elusive black and gold commode.

When it comes to capturing the moment, I'm pretty terrible. I had a great time in California, but most of the best images will remain in my head. Still, I thought you guys might appreciate a few shots I did remember to take in between downing wine, stuffing my face and exploring.

We flew into San Francisco Tuesday night and left for Napa first thing in the morning. Thank heavens for the time change, I was ready to party by 8AM. Ma(i)sonry was the first stop where we had a great breakfast of red and white wine. I think red has more protein.

Love that spot- amazing artifacts and super nice staff.

Next up we hit our favorite restaurant in the hills, Auberge du Soleil. My pics do it no justice- check out the website, or better yet go yourself and eat the lobster salad. Then it was on to more wineries. I think I may have crawled into bed around 8pm. Pacing myself, what does that mean?

Thursday morning we headed south to visit friends in Monterrey. What a pretty place- makes Philadelphia seem like dullsville. We had lunch on the water, continued on to another wine tasting, then a night of festivities at their awesome hillside home. I officially now need a chicken coupe. Totally forgot to capture any pictures this day. Silly iPhone died.

The next morning we drove down the pacific coast to see Big Sur. It was purdy.

Friday and Saturday were all about San Francisco and hanging out with my little sis, Becca and my brother in law, Asaf. We ate (Ferry Building, Foreign Cinema, unknown Mexican joint that coincided with too many Margaritas,) We shopped (great home stores in the Mission, Hayes Valley, and the Marina) and we just walked around and chilled out. I saw a few Curtis Jere sculptures for reasonable prices. Unfortunately I already blew my budget on wine. Still kicking myself for that.

Sunday morning I was hurting bad from the aforementioned margaritas and had to hop a plane home. And that, Folks, was the quickie trip out west. Can't wait to go again next year. I've got to help Becca decorate her new apartment, after all.

Hey guys! I'm back from my California vacay. It was a great time, but I definitely have vacation hangover this morning. Dangalang, these images are making me want a sawhorse desk like yesterday.

So what if I have "organizational issues" and there is absolutely no storage in these guys. Maybe it would inspire me to be a better person? The kinda gal that filed on a regular basis and wasn't prone to being a piler. Piles are my enemies.

60 second makeover

Do you ever overthink about the decor of your home? Perhaps you want to make a change, but you are paralyzed with what direction to go. Sometimes it's really quite simple. Look at what a difference a rug makes. One bold element added or subtracted can revitalize a whole room. This is why I love design!

I know HGTV tells you to paint your wall a bold color, but I'm telling you something even simpler- change up your rug, or your pillows, or your art. Hell I rotate all of mine seasonally and I find each room appreciates the change. I do too.
